The controls feel natural and intuitive, even while playing with Joy-Con. But unlike Doom, there isn't an option to turn off motion blur, so you’re stuck with this look even if it causes you nausea. Textures are pretty low-rez, too, and that’s especially apparent if you're playing on a big-screen TV. Just like Panic Button’s ambitious port of Doom for Switch, Wolfenstein 2 appears to have a dynamic resolution that caps out at 720p and drops as low as 480p when battles get really heated.
Even the cutscenes hitch for some reason, and those are prerendered.
It’s definitely playable throughout the 14-hour campaign, but the performance issues are hard to ignore in both docked and handheld modes. When you’re up against big groups of Nazis or large enemies, the action gets too hot for the Switch to handle and the frame rate drops below the targeted 30 frames per second. With brisk levels that offer frequent checkpoints, it’s the kind of game that allows you to jump in and out whenever you’re in the mood for an inglorious rampage. With everything from its compelling cast of heroes to its brutal and gratifying fast-paced combat, Wolfenstein 2 makes me feel like a true Nazi-killing machine.
